Course Contents
Study of chemical equilibria in solution and volumetric determinations. Practical experiences in laboratory.
Reference Texts
Available material, Skoog-Leary - Chimica Analitica Strumentale - EDISES
Learning Outcomes
The students should be able to understand and solve problems about chemical equilibria in solution, knowing qualitative and quantitative chemistry procedures. Scope of the course is to enable students to perform the analytical methods of qualitative/quantitative analysis in the laboratory providing them with the fundamental concepts for good laboratory practice and promoting their autonomy.
Prerequisites
None
Teaching Methods
In class lessons, laboratory experiences
Additional Information
The knowledge is evaluated by classroom exercises.
Students with physical disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Special Education Needs can request specific services and tools via the Staff Sviluppo e Coordinamento Carriere e Servizi alle Studentesse e agli Studenti, consulting the University webpage: https://www.uniupo.it/en/services/servicesstudents-physical-or-learning-disabilities.

Students with disabilities, learning disabilities or special education needs, once they have contacted the University Staff, can refer to the tutor in charge of the course to define the examination modalities, concerning academic aspects.
Assessment Methods
Written exam consisting of exercises on chemical equilibria in solution (acid-base, buffers, solubility product, complex formation, redox, competitive equilibria).
An example exam from a prevoius session and its solutions will be available on the Moodle platform. The written exam is followed by its discussion by the student, and a discussion on the laboratory reports.
Detailed Syllabus
Equilibria in solution (acid-base, complexes, precipitation, redox); activity coefficient; volumetric determinations (titration curves, indicator systems, important titrations).
Quantitative methods: method validation, representation of the results (average, standard deviation, confidence interval and Statistical hypothesis testing), critical level, LOD, LOQ, calibration curve, internal standard method, standard addition method, single addition method.
Laboratory
ectures: brief introduction to laboratory experiences.
Individual and/or group laboratory exercises include:
• titration of copper by complexometric route
• determination of copper and zinc in one of its most common alloys: comparison of the results obtained by determination in UV-Vis spectrophotometry and titration.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
- knowledge of the theoretical basis of chemical equilibria in solution
- knowledge of the theoretical/practical bases of the main analytical techniques (chromatographic, elementary)
- knowledge of the performance indices of analytical methods
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding - know how to face and solve problems on chemical equilibria
- be able to compare different techniques for the same purpose also through the analysis of analytical performance indices
- know how to perform analysis
Communication skills
- acquire and know how to use an appropriate chemical vocabulary in relation to the topics covered in the course
- know how to draw up a technical-scientific report
Making judgements
- know how to choose the best procedure to solve problems on chemical equilibria
- know how to choose between different analytical techniques to solve a given analytical problem
- know how to deal with a volumetric analysis by making the appropriate choices from an experimental point of view
Learning skills
- ability to use the study material independently to solve analytical problems
