Course Contents
The course aims to introduce the principles of analytical techniques used in the omic field, with particular reference to proteomics and metabolomics. The performance indexes of an analytical method (LOD, LOQ, accuracy and precision, accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility, recovery, dynamic and linear range, robustness etc.) will be introduced. The principles of instrumentation for liquid and gas chromatography, coupled with mass spectrometry, and their use in the field of proteomics and metabolomics will then be introduced. The differences between the targeted and untargeted approach and the strategies for choosing the best analytical approach for a practical problem will be illustrated. We will also mention the processing of the data. Finally, students will be guided in carrying out a bibliographic research and solving a case study proposed by the teacher.

Learning Outcomes
The course aims to provide the student with knowledge of the most widespread analytical instrumentation in the omic field (liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry) and on the parameters to evaluate the performance of an analytical method. Knowledge is also provided about the sample pretreatment methods for omic analysis.
The student will acquire critical sense skills, honing the ability to choose the best experimental strategy to solve a given analytical problem.
Communication skills will also be stimulated through an appropriate lexicon and the proposal of case studies that students will have to solve and present via ppt presentation.

Teaching Methods
Frontal lessons or, in the event of a persisting emergency related to COVID-19, video lessons in streaming mode and / or via video on a dedicated YouTube channel.

Assessment Methods
Oral exam consisting of:
- a question on the topics of the course which may concern: 1) the description of the principles of an analytical technique; 2) the description of the instrumentation used in the omic field; 3) solution of a simple analytical problem for which the student must select the best analytical approach.
- 5-10 minute ppt presentation on the case study agreed with the teacher.
Detailed Syllabus
Introduction to the course. Performance indices of an analytical method (LOD, LOQ, accuracy and precision, accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility, recovery, dynamic and linear range, robustness etc.). Basic principles of instrumentation for liquid and gas chromatography. Introduction to omic techniques. Use of chromatographic techniques (HPLC and GC) and their coupling with mass spectrometry in the omic sciences. Targeted and untargeted proteomics. Targeted and untargeted metabolomics. Notes on methods of pre-treatment of the sample in the omic field. Notes on data treatment in the omic field. Strategies for identifying the best analytical approach to solving a given problem. Bibliographic research and how to solve a case study.

Knowledge and understanding
- knowledge of the theoretical and theoretical / practical bases of the most modern analysis techniques in the omic field (liquid and gas chromatography, mass spectrometry)
