Course Contents
The course deals with the basic aspects of laboratory diagnostic with special reference to the factors responsible for the variability of analytical data and their control.

Learning Outcomes
The course gives the basic notions of laboratory medicine the capability to understand the factors that can affect reliability of the analytical tests.
Prerequisites
The students should have basic knowledge of Physics, chemistry Biology, Anatomy, Medical Genetic, Histology and Physiology

Power point presentation. Classroom discussion on the topics covered to stimulate students' communication skills using appropriate terminology

Assessment Methods
The exam is based on an oral interview. To achieve a sufficient assessment useful for passing the exam, the students must demonstrate that they have assimilated the basic notions imparted in the course and that they are able to integrate them with those of the courses that are part of the same integrated course. In addition, students will have to demonstrate the ability to express themselves using appropriate vocabulary.
Detailed Syllabus
General features of laboratory diagnostic. Classification of laboratory tests. Biological materials and their application to lab diagnostic. Handling of biological samples. Per analytical variability: causes and their control of pre-analytical variables. Analytical variability. Factors contributing to analytical precision, accuracy and specificity. The basis of quality control in laboratory medicine Biological variability and its influence in analytical tests The reference values and their determination. Diagnostic specificity and sensibility of laboratory tests and their predictive value.
Expected Learning Outcomes
According to the Dublin descriptors D1- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student will know and understand the basic notions relating to the fundamentals of pre-analytical procedures and the control of variability in the context of clinical analyzes. D2-ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student will acquire the ability to use the theoretical knowledge imparted in class to reason critically, demonstrating that he is able to make connections between the different topics and to apply the knowledge acquired in the context of clinical analyzes. D3-AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT: The student will acquire the ability to critically examine the theoretical notions acquired and to be able to argue independently the problems deriving from their practical application. D4-COMMUNICATION SKILLS: The student will acquire the ability to disseminate the assimilated knowledge using a specific and appropriate vocabulary in order to be able to confront in a professional and competent manner in the academic and subsequently work environment. In addition, the student will acquire the ability to transmit the assimilated knowledge in a clear and understandable way even to a general public. D5-LEARNING SKILLS: The student will acquire a learning ability useful for continuous and constant updating about the procedures to be performed in the context of a clinical analysis laboratory.
