This theoretical and practice-oriented course focuses on the formal characteristics of a scientific essay and, more generally, of an argumentative text, as well as on the techniques required for writing a scientific essay in the humanities.

Through the introduction of fundamental theoretical concepts (argumentative text, argumentation, and explanation) and targeted practical exercises, the course aims to provide students with the tools to analyse (a) the argumentative structure and (b) the rhetorical construction of academic essays in the humanities. At a more advanced level, the course seeks to develop students' ability to produce academic texts independently, including essays, journal articles, thesis introductions or chapters, and undergraduate dissertations.

1) Carrying out the exercises available, together with other study-materials, on DIR. 2) Writing one part of an essay of your choice from: - introduction - Literature Review - critical analysis of a topic - conclusion. The grade will depend on the achievement of the following objectives: - semantic and syntactic adequacy of the essay ( language register, technical vocabulary, grammatical and syntactical correctness, logical consistency, argumentative clarity) - stylistic and formal adequacy (notes, citations, bibliography)

Introduction: Texts, argumentative texts, and scholarly texts: why it is important to analyse and evaluate them. 2 The structure of an argumentative/scholarly text. 3) Evaluating an argumentative/scholarly text. 4) Writing a scholarly essay: a) Title, Introduction, and Literature Review. b) Structure, Outlining, and Paragraph Development. c) Paraphrasing, Summarising, and Commentary. d) Citations and Plagiarism. e) Objections and Conclusions. f) Footnotes and Bibliography. g) Research Resources.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: 1) analyse and evaluate the argumentative structure of an essay, identifying the type of argument presented; 2) plan and write an essay with (a) an appropriate argumentative structure and (b) a command of technical terminology; 3) compile and format a suitable bibliography for their research, ensuring stylistic consistency.
