Agri-food Law

The articles to study are defined at the beginning of the lessons.

The course aims to provide students with the knowledge of food law principles to have the tools to orient themselves within the articulated international, European and national discipline that regulates the agri-food sector.

No prerequisites required in addition to the skills acquired with the first year courses.

Frontal teaching with the help of slides.
During the course, some seminars explore specific issues and the students can participate in conferences organized by the professor or by UPO.

Students who attend lectures regularly, receive an assessment based on participation and contribution to classroom, included the presentation of the project (this assessment accounts for 50% of the final grade).
Team reports are evaluated with 1 points (24/30), 2 points (27/30) and 3 points (30/30).
For these students, the written test includes only 1 question. The final grade is the result of the average of the written test with the report carried out in the classroom.
For non-attending students, it is required a written exam (sixty minutes to three questions, ten points each, to be answered briefly) concerning the contents of the suggested book.
All students (attending and non-attending students) are thus expected to achieve a basic knowledge of the fundamental notions of agri-food law and how it is applied.

The Common Agricultural Policy.
Biodiversity protection.
Food safety.
The legislation on new foods, on foods consisting of GMOs. Foods from organic farming.
The rules on food labelling and advertising.
The patent rights (geographical mark); IGP and DOP; Made in Italy, Green made in Italy and other rules for the enhancement of food products.
Unfair practices, competent authorities, late payments.
Official controls and sanctions.

To achieve the skills and knowledge expected at the end of the course, the student is required to know the basic notions of agri-food law and to reach the end of the course knowing how to examine and understand a practical case in order to find a concrete solution.
