Course Contents
The integrated course aims to provide general and specific notions on hematological, immunological and rheumatological diseases, infectious diseases in particular the most common and frequent, in order to provide the basis for suspecting the most common pathologies and starting the appropriate diagnostic pathway. Clinical cases/scenarios to be solved will be addressed. Furthermore, the principles of evidence-based medicine (EBM) and the statistical methods commonly used in EBM will be addressed.
Reference Texts
Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine 22nd ed. 2025
Learning Outcomes
To develop an understanding of the physiopathological mechanisms that lead to the functional alterations characteristic of diseases of the hematopoietic system, the immune system and the musculoskeletal system and infectious diseases; to promote the acquisition of the main notions of epidemiology, etiopathogenesis and physiopathology, clinical presentation (symptoms and signs), complications, laboratory and instrumental tests and rational bases of therapy necessary to approach the patient); in starting the mechanism of medical competence through which, starting from symptoms and/or groups of symptoms, from the clinical examination and from alterations of biohumoral data, we progress to the identification and reconstruction of the physiopathological mechanisms specific to many syndromes and diseases, allowing their recognition and clinical diagnosis; to begin the process of critically connecting the clinical elements common to different pathologies, their recognition, their interrelations, as well as the clinical study of those differences and diversities that distinguish the different disease processes and constitute the basis of the differential diagnosis method. Use EBM concepts and associated statistical methods to rationally approach the diagnosis and differential diagnosis process.
Prerequisites
Notions of microbiology and virology, immunology and fundamentals of pathology, Methodology and medical semiotics.
Teaching Methods
frontal lesson / remote multimedia teaching interactive discussion of clinical cases with digital tools
Additional Information

Assessment Methods
Written/computer-based exam with multiple-choice questions on the subjects that make up the integrated course and oral exam with evaluation and resolution of clinical scenarios.
Detailed Syllabus
Please refer to the programmes of the individual integrated courses.
Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the student must be able to understand the physiopathological mechanisms of the most common infectious, haematological, immunological and rheumatological diseases and be able to distinguish the most frequent clinical pictures and set up a diagnostic path of preliminary confirmation or exclusion also using EBM tools.
