Learning Outcomes
Provide the foundations for understanding the fundamental laws that govern matter and its transformations, with particular attention to biological phenomena at the atomic and molecular level, in relation to biomedical application
Prerequisites
The course requires knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology consistent with the preparation promoted by educational institutions that provide learning activities in line with the National Guidelines for high schools and the curricular frameworks for technical and vocational institutes.
Teaching Methods
Lectures will be conducted using slide presentations and video projections. Problems, quizzes, and case studies will be solved in class to guide students toward independent problem-solving. Students will also have the opportunity to work on problems, quizzes, and case studies at home using the Moodle DIR platform. Additional materials on topics related to applied chemistry in health and human physiology will be made available to students as handouts. For exam preparation, students can use the materials provided by the instructor as well as the recommended textbooks to further explore the topics discussed in class.
Additional Information
During the lectures, all the topics included in the Syllabus will be addressed as far as possible. However, given time constraints, the level of detail may vary across different subjects. Classroom teaching will therefore be aimed at providing a solid conceptual foundation to guide the student in their individual study. Recording and unauthorized distribution of lectures are strictly prohibited. The student is required to complete their preparation through independent study and in-depth learning activities, making use of any teaching materials provided and the recommended texts. These resources allow the integration and consolidation of acquired knowledge, as well as further exploration of topics not directly addressed during the lectures but included in the Syllabus. The recommended texts are useful for enabling the student to complete their preparation on all the topics covered by the Syllabus, whether or not they are directly addressed by the instructor during the lectures. Some texts may not include all the topics specified in the course; in such cases, the student is required to consult additional texts in order to complete their preparation on all the topics included in the Syllabus.

Expected Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding At the end of the course, the student will be able to: describe the structure and transformations of matter and interpret molecular phenomena occurring in living organisms, with particular focus on acid-base equilibria, physiological buffers, gas laws, solubility in heterogeneous equilibria, osmotic phenomena, solution properties, and redox reactions recognize the main classes of organic compounds and functional groups, describing their chemical and physical properties and reactivity, also in relation to the functions of biological macromolecules identify the different classes of biologically relevant molecules, describing their structures and indicating their functions Applying knowledge and understanding At the end of the course, the student will be able to: identify types of chemical bonds and perform basic reaction balancing carry out simple but essential calculations involving solution concentrations and osmolarity apply acquired thermodynamic knowledge to chemical and physical transformation processes relevant to biomedicine apply acquired knowledge to processes involved in respiration, osmotic balance maintenance, and acid-base equilibria in biological fluids write and identify chemical formulas and bonds of major biologically relevant organic compounds apply knowledge of organic reaction mechanisms to understand biochemical reactions and predict the reactivity of biomolecules based on their functional groups Autonomy of judgment At the end of the course, the student will be able to: critically evaluate information form informed opinions make independent decisions Communication skills At the end of the course, the student will be able to clearly and effectively communicate their knowledge and information Learning skills At the end of the course, the student will be able to: learn independently and continuously update their skills and knowledge
