The course integrates several modules, including PEDIATRICS, FORENSIC MEDICINE, and HYGIENE. The content focuses primarily on the principles and methodologies of these disciplines, from the principles of newborn and child physiology to an overview of the main developmental pathologies, with a focus on prevention strategies. The course offers an overview of the history of hygiene and preventive medicine. The foundations of proper public health management are also illustrated. The course will provide basic elements of forensic medicine (criminal and civil) useful for practicing the profession.

PEDIATRICS • Provide basic health knowledge in the pediatric field; • Understand the specific features of the educational process related to major chronic pediatric diseases and their prevention. LEGAL MEDICINE • Address medico-legal issues related to the profession; • Understand applicable laws and regulations; • Know the fundamentals of professional liability; • Recognize and describe injuries of medico-legal interest; • Provide up-to-date knowledge on the main areas of medico-legal interest for professional practice; • Develop autonomous critical thinking on the topics discussed; • Demonstrate critical understanding of the knowledge acquired. HYGIENE • Define actions and implications of hygiene and public health; • Define the concept of health; • Assess the health needs of a population; • Identify priorities for intervention; • Measure health risks to which a population is exposed; • Choose prevention interventions based on scientific evidence of effectiveness; • List the main environmental health risks and discuss intervention characteristics; • Discuss major health risks linked to poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and sedentary lifestyle; • Understand causes and prevention of infections.

Students must have a basic understanding of the main educational and rehabilitation projects. They must have a basic understanding of statistics. They must also have sufficient knowledge and skills to understand written English for reading scientific articles.

Lectures will be conducted with slides and individual in-depth analysis of topics covered during the lectures. Content will be conveyed through the reading of scientific articles and plenary discussion. Some lessons will utilize simulations.

The exam will consist of a written test and an oral exam. PEDIATRICS: Written exam with multiple-choice questions. Answering 60% of the questions will be considered sufficient. FORENSIC MEDICINE: The assessment will cover the entire course content and any individual in-depth study assigned. Written exam with multiple-choice questions on the course topics. HYGIENE: Oral exam: The grade will be a weighted average of the three exams.

PEDIATRICS • Neonatal physiology; • Principles of auxology; • Neonatal and pediatric nutrition; • Developmental milestones; • Pediatric infectious diseases and vaccinations; • Main chronic diseases of childhood, with a focus on gender differences; • Training in healthcare through simulation. LEGAL MEDICINE • Elements of criminal forensic medicine – Crimes against the person relevant to healthcare professionals; Reporting and notification to Judicial Authorities; • Professional secrecy and confidentiality – Privacy regulations; • Elements of civil forensic medicine; • Informed consent and compulsory medical treatments; • Gender perspective: managing victims of gender-based violence in healthcare settings; • Elements of professional liability; • Elements of traumatology and forensic pathology; • Forensic aspects related to INAIL, INPS, and ASL (Italian social security and healthcare institutions). HYGIENE PUBLIC HEALTH CONTEXT • Impact of demographic and economic changes on health and public health. HEALTH NEEDS ANALYSIS • Epidemiological health indicators: incidence, prevalence, YPLL, YLD, DALY; • Research methodologies for needs assessment: prevalence studies; • Global Burden of Diseases; • Priorities and health trends in Italy. RISK ANALYSIS • Association indicators in etiological epidemiology: RR, OR, etc.; • Attributable Risk indicators: AR, PAR, and NNT; • Main risk factors for non-communicable diseases and trends; • Distal determinants and risk factors; • Social inequalities in health; • Defining health priorities for a population. PREVENTION INTERVENTIONS • Natural history of health problems and possible interventions; • Primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention, health promotion, and health education; • Complexity of interventions targeting human behaviors; • Evaluation of prevention interventions; • Evidence-based effective prevention programs; • Vaccinations and vaccination plans.

PEDIATRICS Knowledge of approaches to healthy and sick neonates and children. LEGAL MEDICINE To meet the minimum competency level, students must demonstrate: (KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS) • Knowledge and application of the fundamental principles of forensic medicine, particularly in the healthcare professional/patient relationship (informed consent, patient self-determination, compulsory medical treatment, professional secrecy and confidentiality); • Knowledge of crimes relevant to healthcare professionals to properly draft a report or notification to judicial authorities; • Ability to identify and describe injuries of medico-legal interest; • Awareness of issues related to unaccompanied foreign minors; • Knowledge and application of professional liability principles. (TRANSFERABLE SKILLS) • Ability to draft reports or notifications to judicial authorities; • Knowledge of the rights and duties in healthcare professional practice. HYGIENE • Discuss the main characteristics of the Italian National Health System; • Identify the main health problems of the Italian population; • Identify major population health risks; • Perform simple calculations of health status indicators; • Read and interpret health status reports; • Describe the main risk factors affecting the Italian population; • Identify effective primary prevention interventions from major databases; • Apply evidence-based primary prevention measures; • Discuss challenges in primary and secondary prevention interventions; • Apply key preventive measures for infectious diseases.
