The course focuses on techniques and regulations for optimizing the use of drugs and medical devices with an in-depth look at the Compounding Center for the centralized and personalized preparation of complex and highly dangerous drugs.

The course is 1 CFU with 10 hours of classroom lessons. Good Manufacturing Practices published inside the Italian Official Pharmacopoeia (XII Edition) give national rules for preparation of medicines in the pharmacy. During the lessons the students will be instructed about the standards for assuring that compounded products are sterile at the time of dispensing, after preparation in an hospital pharmacy. The following topics will be described: sterile compounding and aseptic technique, safety in sterile compounding, antibiotics prophylaxis, analgesia infusions, artificial nutrition, chemotherapy. The role of clinical pharmacist and of the laboratory technician will be developed, in order to well position the evolution of the clinical pharmacy in the italian contest.

The student must have basic knowledge of Pharmacology.

Written exam consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions. For each question with the correct answer, a score of 1.50 points is awarded. The exam is considered passed with a passing grade (18) by answering 12 questions correctly.

Italian Official Pharmacopoeia (XII Edition) and Good Manufacturing Practices in Hospital Pharmacy. Sterile compounding and aseptic technique. Safety in sterile compounding and devices for the individual protections inside the Laboratory of an Hospital Pharmacy. National Classification of the medical devices used in the compounding. Galenic drugs, antibiotics prophylaxis, preparation of compounded sterile analgesia infusions, parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy.

The Dublin descriptors will be the terms of verification: D1- KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTANDING: The student will know and understand the basic concepts of general pharmacology and the pharmacotoxicological characteristics of substances of abuse and various drug classes. D2-ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: The student will acquire the ability to use the theoretical knowledge taught in class to reason critically, demonstrating the ability to make connections between different topics and to apply the acquired knowledge in the context of clinical analyses of various drugs or toxic substances. D3-JUDGMENT ABILITY: The student will acquire the ability to critically examine the theoretical concepts acquired and to be able to independently argue the issues arising from their practical application. D4-COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS: The student will acquire the ability to disseminate the assimilated knowledge using specific and appropriate vocabulary in order to be able to interact professionally and competently in an academic and subsequently professional context. D5-LEARNING SKILLS: The student will acquire the knowledge related to the activities of the Biomedical Laboratory Technician in the laboratories of the Hospital Pharmacy.
