The notion of government is used in many languages to point out, at the same time, the whole of political institutions of a country and the executive branch. The first part of the course aims at exploring the concept of government by comparing its philological roots, the philosophical theories, the uses in the common language and the technical uses in the political and in the legal field. The second part will be devoted to the analysis of the notions of “governability” and “governance”, both derived from the term “government” and both very relevant in contemporary political and scientific debate.

The first part of the course will be dedicated to the analysis of the different perspectives of the sociology of health and illness and to the reading of the classics on the subject. The second part, however, will be devoted to the evolution of the legislation of the Italian national health system and its comparison with other international systems.

The course explores how the theoretical perspective of "life course" can be used to understand the development of deviant careers. Particular attention will be devoted to the factors and processes related to the persistence in delinquency and desisting from deviance.

The course aims at deepening the changes of contemporary welfare systems, stressing their local reorganization. The first part of the course will be focused on the concept of welfare state: from an historical perspective, the varieties of welfare systems will be analyzed. The second part will concern the changes of these systems: issues such as governance, re-scaling and subsidiarity will be debated here. Finally, the third part will be committed to analyzing the local reorganization of the Italian welfare system, with a particular attention for the risks of exclusion entailed by this new organization of social policy.

The classical authors considered for this part of the course will be the following: Karl Marx, Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, Georg Simmel, Robert Merton, George Herbert Mead, Alfred Shutz, Erving Goffman, Harold Garfinkel, Pierre Bourdieu, Michel Foucault, Jurgen Habermas, Stuart Hall e Luc Boltanski. Obviously, only small parts of their complex theorisations will be considered, namely those directly relevant for a sociology of media and communication. The first part is intended as an opportunity to review classical approaches in sociology such as structuralism, functionalism, conflict theories, symbolic interactionism, phenomenology, field theory etc. A second part will illustrate the specific interest in a sociological approach to contemporary media. This will be accomplished by constant reference to contemporary communication and media leading scholars such as Gaye Tuchman, Simon Cottle, Rodney Benson, James Curran, Nick Couldry, Roger Silverstone, Sonia Livingstone, Barbie Zelizer, David Morley, Danah Boyd, William A. Gamson, Manuel Castells, Lilie Chouliaraki. The course here will touch big issues and concepts in communication studies such as mediatization process, media rituals, media logic, news-making and news-management, processes of identity-building through media consumption and production, social media use and network society, social movements in the internet age, the transformations of the public sphere, representations of ethnicity and gender in the media. Three selected videos will be showed and collectively analysed. Moreover, a couple of cases of news circulations in old and new media, off-line and on-line will be narrated and discussed. Those collective analysis and open discussions are conceived in order to review some practical concepts and few theoretical models and understand how to use them heuristically.

The course deals with the following topics: - what does it mean "integration"? - what does it mean "integration" in migration contexts? - migration processes, integration patterns, policies

The first part of the course will be dedicated to the analysis of the different perspectives of the sociology of health and illness and to the reading of the classics on the subject. The second part, however, will be devoted to the evolution of the legislation of the Italian national health system and its comparison with other international systems.

The course extends students knowledge of the sociology of migration. The focus is on the long-term effects of migration and its connections with the local system of social stratification. In this context, the course explores conditions of “integration” (in the labour market, the school system, etc.) of migrants and their children. The debate around the concept of “segmented assimilation” will be explained, and more in general that around the “second generation” in the United States and Europe. Attention will be given to “structural” factors influencing the various dimensions of integration, and in this context cases of internal migration will be discussed and compared with international migration.

The course will offer the basic concepts of sociological analysis of regulatory phenomena. In particular, we will consider the following areas: 1) the legal messages 2) the right in action in social and health institutions

Part of the course covers anthropological research on immigration. - For the part on evolutionism. The second section of the first chapter of Robert Deliège’s book, Storia dell’antropologia (Il Mulino, Bologna 2008) entitled “L’evoluzionismo in antropologia” and the last section on “Il contributo e i limiti dell’antropologia evoluzionista” provide information on nineteenth century evolutionist perspectives. The sections on Morgan, Tylor and Frazer give basic information on three influential nineteenth-century scholars working in an evolutionist perspective. Evans-Pritchard’s book, Stregoneria, oracoli e magia tra gli Azande (Raffaello Cortina Editore, Milano 2002) show how one anthropologist made sense of beliefs and practices which on the surface appear totally irrational and totally distant from our own. Angeli, Milano, 2008 is an interesting anthropological description of the social situation and beliefs of young Moroccans who wish to migrate from Casablanca and Khouribga, and of some who have actually managed to migrate and live in Turin. This “multi-sited” study is interesting for many reasons but is particularly useful on the “culture of migration” and on feelings of frustration and marginalization both in Morocco and in Italy. - P. Cingolani, Romeni d’Italia. Migrazioni, vita quotidiana e legami transnazionali, Il Mulino, Bologna 2009 is a bi-national study of Romanian migrants in Turin and in the small town of Marginea in north-east Romania. Interesting for many aspects of migration from post-communist Europe, on “integration” in the labour market and the housing market in Turin, and on effects of migration in Marginea. - Boissevain’s essay on “brokers” is an influential piece on how people may exploit their intermediary position linking different categories of people and thus earn political or personal profit; - D.
